Revised Landscape Artist Essay

The artist I chose for my landscape paragraph is Ansel Adams. Adams was born on February 20th, 1902 in San Francisco, California and died on April 22, 1984. Adams grew up to be an environmentalist and a photographer. The year 1927 was Adam’s biggest year of his life. During that year he realized that he had a talent for photography.

Adams was a landscape photographer so he took pictures of nature. His pictures are in black and white and have a lot of contrast. I am inspired by the dark hues and bright whites.

After seeing some of Ansel Adams’s photos, I will base my future pictures off his work. In my future projects I will focus more on light. Also in Adam’s photos he does not take pictures close up, he takes pictures with a lot of subject matter. When I take more landscape photos I will step back to try and get more land into my images. In Adams’s photographs he focuses on the natural light and shadows to make contrast. I will also focus more on natural light and shadows when taking landscape pictures.

The artist I chose for my portrait project is John French. John French was born in Edmonton, London on March 1st, 1907 and died on July 21st, 1966. When French first started taking photos he was trained as a commercial artist and became a photographic director at an advertising studio right before World War II. In 1948, French set up his own studio and changed his style of photos to fashion and portrait photography. In his photos, French focuses on natural light and low contrast. French’s work is mostly commercial but after he married Vere Denning, a fashion journalist, he put some of his work in the Victoria and Albert Museum.

The three photos I chose inspired me because of the sharpness and black and white printing. John French took photos in the 1960s so he used film which made the photos look sharp. He took pictures in black and white which made the shadows and contrast stand out. French was a fashion photographer so the main focus of his pictures was the clothes.

After seeing John French’s style, I have learned how to focus more on shadows and contrast. I will also print my pictures in black and white to enhance my images. I am inspired by French’s 1960s vintage style. I will replicate French’s vintage style for my portrait project.

Photography Reading

  2. – “…which raises the question of whether we engage in a kind of ‘social media tourism’ today as we vicariously devour other people’s lives”. This quote is explaining how today mostly everyone has social media and everyone is posting everything that they do. This allows people to access anything that they want at any time.
  • “Online, thirty-some years after Sontag’s observation, this aggression precipitates a kind of social media violence of self-assertion”. This quote is explaining how many people are so absorbed in social media that they take everything personally.
  • “…aggressive self-framing we practice as we portray ourselves pictorially on Facebook, Instagram…”. This quote is telling us that people are too concerned with posting pictures on social media to make other envy you.
  1. The author’s point in writing this chapter was to tell the reader that photography is being taken advantage of. That people are more concerned with making a person jealous than capturing an experience in their life.
  2. This chapter has taught me to focus more on the subject of the picture and the experience of the picture rather than to take a picture to get someone jealous or angry.
